L3 CREATIVE MEDIA
what is Genre?
A genre is a category used to classify works of art, like books, music or film, based on shared themes, style or form. it helps audiences understand what to expect from a piece of media, as genres create conventions that shape the content and tone. by grouping media with similar characteristics it makes it easier for people to find the kinds of content that they enjoy.

Steve Neale's Genre theory suggests that genres are not fixed, instead they're constantly evolving as creators mix familiar ideas with new elements. Neale argues that genres rely on a blend of "Repetition and difference", meaning audiences find comfort in familiar conventions but are also drawn to fresh ideas and new twists. By balancing expected structures with unique ideas, genres can stay relevant and engaging across different eras and cultures.

Sub-genres
A sub-genre is a smaller category within a main genre that emphasizes particular themes, settings or styles. For example, slasher horror is a sub genre of horror focused on killers stalking and attacking victims, like in Halloween.
Hybrid-genres
A hybrid genre combines elements from two or more genres to create a different approach. for example, Horror-comedy, like Shaun of the dead, mixes fear and humour.
