The subject, aka the protagonist, is under-lit with a red light. significant use of red is a common theme amongst horror film as it possesses connotations of danger, warning or blood. The aforementioned lighting technique is used since it casts unnatural an exaggerated shadows on the face, causing the subject to look unsettling or distorted.
