Foley Sound

Most of the diegetic sound you hear in movies is created and added in by Foley artists. Foley is the art of recreating everyday sounds, such as footsteps, doors creaking etc. for enhanced effect in films, shows and games. Foley can be split into 4 major categories; Footsteps, Spots, Moves and Ambience. Footsteps and Moves are what they say on the can. Spots are isolated, individual sounds, and ambience is the general background noise, like wind or traffic.

For each category in Foley there are many things to consider, like what the person is wearing, what they're walking on, how big they are or fast they're moving, etc.

Foley is used commonly, and its likely that most movies you've seen have had sound effects added in by a Foley team. There's lots of reasons Foley might be used, not limited to;

- Making a movie more realistic (sci-fi)

- Adding in sounds for CG characters/objects who   can't make their own

- Builds atmosphere and world, gives context about   the environment

- Nature documentaries

Re-creating Foley

This is the clip my pair decided on doing. We have to watch the clip multiple times and note anything that could be making noise, then re-create those noises and add them to the footage.

We edited the sounds to the clip separately. There's more to hear at the start than the end since certain sounds we had a hard time recreating with limited resources - like the dog.
