Recording Dialogue
Recording Dialogue
We recorded most of what's needed on Thursday afternoon (27/03). My friends Kye and Adam voiced the older worker and boss respectively, and I voiced the newer worker. before recording i briefed each person on their character and told them to stick loosely to the storyboard i made. A lot of the dialogue was improv, and we plan to do more recording some time soon. I assume ill draw images for what I have and we will record again when its apparent I'm missing something.
we recorded on kye's set up, which is a laptop, interface, 1 mic and FL Studio. we recorded straight onto one track without many breaks, this is so I can chop up my audio and take the parts I like out.

Complicated personal events rendered this audio unusable, and I had to re-record with different people in a different loaction on 10/04. I was unable to re-record more audio with kye because of personal issues. This time we recorded at Adam's house with his set up. these recordings are much more grounded and honestly funnier so ill most likely use these. we also did a lot more takes so I have more of this audio to work with than the previous.

Unfortunately, due to even more complicated personal events, I'm no longer able to work with Ashton and Adam. I do not have enough time to re-record my audio AGAIN, since I've already had to do it twice, so i'll have to make do with what I got from the second set of recordings.
In total we had about 5 complete takes all recorded onto one track. I cut them up in Premier Pro and chose the parts I liked the most. its not the most professional sounding.. but at the end of the day, most professional animatics for shows use temporary audio anyway.
I just let my voice actors ramble and say things they thought were funny, then I took the best parts and aligned them to sound somewhat natural.

I left spaces for sound effects and animation, i'll go back in once the animatic is done and add foley.

Sound Effects
since I'm pressed for time, we had to simulate a lot of the sound effects due to lack of access to a good microphone. I did this with help from my friend kye in FL Studio. In total we made about 12 sound effects, like a spaceship flying overhead, a crash landing, a door slamming, alien chatter, a mop etc.

When making the ray gun sound effect, I used this plugin that randomizes the effects applied to the sound each time. we recorded a bunch of different versions and I picked my favourite for the final cut.
Plugins are independent programs that can work like effects or instruments, they can be applied to sounds in the playlist.
This is the plugin:

This is us recording the different variations of the sound. you can see that each waveform is unique.

For other sound effects, like the mopping and sound used in the establishing shot, we layered sounds from kye's library of assets in the playlist and applied effects, faded them in/out etc.
This is the playlist for the "intro scene.wav" sfx.

Here are some other Plugins and things we used in order to get the sounds I needed.

Next I had to import my sound effects to premier pro and line them up so they fit the footage.

The sound fx were sometimes too loud and overshadowed the dialogue, so to fix this I lowered the volume and made some of them fade in/out in necessary.
